"No woman can make herself chic if she is not chic herself."  Cristobal Balenciaga
Cristobal Balenciaga was born in 1895 and opened his first clothing shop in 1915 in Spain.  He opened his Paris couture house in 1937, and he became almost immediately one of the top couturiers in Paris, designing frequently for royalty.   He was known for his use of stiff fabrics, which gave the clothes a sculptural appearance.  Among his innovations were the kimono-sleeve coat, the sack dress, the baby doll dress, and the balloon dress.   He trained many noted designers, including Hubert de Givenchy, Andre Courreges, Oscar de la Renta, Emanuel Ungaro, and Paco Rabanne.  Balenciaga combined designer and tailor as no one had before - Coco Chanel praised him as the only couturier who could design, cut, assemble, and sew a dress all by himself, and Christian Dior called him "The Master of Us All".
"A couturier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for color, a musician for harmony, and a philosopher for temperance."  Cristobal Balenciaga
Balenciaga was named Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1958.  He was the most acclaimed designer in the world at the time, and was a favorite designer of icons such as Princess Grace of Monaco and Jacqueline Kennedy.
He closed his couture houses in 1968, when he was upset with both the rise of pret-a-porter clothing and what he saw as vulgar modern designs.
Balenciaga died in 1972, but the line was continued after his death, with such notables as Josephus Thimister and now Nicolas Ghesquiere designing for the house.
Balenciaga's creations are the subject of an exhibition of the Meadows Museum in conjunction with the Texas Fashion Collection.
"What interests me about a garment is the 'transformation'.  The process of turning an idea into something specific and concrete."  Nicolas Ghesquiere
Ghesquiere, one of the youngest designers of any major fashion house, has brought a new sense of exploration to the house of Balenciaga, breaking frontiers in embellishment, shape, and volume, while remaining true to the rigorous, uncompromising standards set by the founder.
