"Fashion is not art.  It is a profession.  It must be done with a lot of rigor."  Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel
Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was born in 1883.  She opened a millinery shop in 1910, and by 1914 had expanded to sell women's clothes as well.   Among her early innovations were the Chanel suit (boxy jacket and knee-length skirt) and the use of jersey in women's clothing.  Chanel also took fashion away from the corsets of the Edwardian era and into simpler, more comfortable clothes that allowed freedom of movement.  Her clothes adapted the principles underlying menswear for womenswear.
In 1922, she introduced her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became the best selling perfume in the world.
Chanel designed the costumes for Jean Cocteau's theatrical productions for 14 years - Cocteau's influence in the artistic world was great enough that Pablo Picasso was designing the sets for some of these plays.
Chanel also popularized the use of costume jewelry with elegant fashion, and brought tweed suits and the "little black dress" into widespread favor.   Chanel closed her couture house in 1939 (keeping her perfume lines in production), but reopened it in 1954, and remained in charge until her death in 1971.  Chanel's most significant innovation during this era was bell bottom pants.
"Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury."  Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel
After her death, the house of Chanel expanded into ready-to-wear clothing, men's fragrances, and a broader range of accessories.
In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as the head designer for Chanel, where he remains to this day.  Lagerfeld's initial collections showed radical changes from the simple lines and cuts that were characteristic of Chanel.  Lagerfeld has continued to infuse the Chanel lines with his own cutting-edge sensibilities.
Time named Coco Chanel among its 100 most important people of the 20th century.  She was the only fashion designer to make their list.
