What a Serial Number or Date Code Actually Tells You
A designer bag's serial number or date code is a small manufacturing mark — usually stamped, heat-embossed, or printed on a sticker — that a house uses to track when and where a bag was made. Read correctly, it can confirm that a bag's age, factory, and format are internally consistent. What it cannot do is prove a bag is real.
This is the single most important thing to understand before you go hunting for a date code: counterfeiters copy these marks too. A fake bag frequently carries a plausible, correctly formatted code, and a genuine bag can have a code that looks "wrong" to someone using an outdated reference. Louis Vuitton Date Codes
Louis Vuitton is the brand most people mean when they ask about "date codes," partly because its system was consistent for decades — and partly because it was discontinued in 2021.
The format changed several times
LV date codes are not serial numbers; multiple bags share the same code. They encode a factory and a date, and the encoding scheme evolved:

Worked example for the 2007–2021 format: a code reading SD2168 breaks down as factory SD, then week = digits 1 and 3 (2 and 6) = week 26, and year = digits 2 and 4 (1 and 8) = 2018. So: made in the 26th week of 2018.
The letters are a factory code, not a country code, and the same letters recur across countries — "SD" appears on both French and U.S.-made bags, for instance. A factory letter alone never proves origin.
The 2021 microchip change matters
Since March 2021, Louis Vuitton has embedded a small RFID chip instead of stamping a date code. That means a genuine recent bag will have no readable date code at all. Sellers and buyers who still insist "no date code = fake" are working from a pre-2021 rulebook. Chanel Serial Numbers
Chanel took a different path: true serial numbers, unique-ish sequences printed on a small adhesive sticker (usually inside a pocket) and matched to a printed authenticity card. Chanel introduced these around 1984–1986.

Two practical points. First, the serial on the sticker should match the authenticity card exactly; a mismatch is a serious warning sign. Hermès is its own discipline: a discreet heat "blind stamp" carries a letter that corresponds to a production year, historically enclosed in a shape (circle, then square) that changed by era, with the shape dropped in more recent years. The letters cycle through the alphabet, so the same letter repeats across decades — the shape and craftsmanship context are what pin it down.
Gucci typically stamps two numbers on an inside leather tab — a style number and a supplier code — which identify the model and maker but rarely pin down a production year. Prada relies on a metal triangle plaque plus a factory code and paper cards; the plaque's finish and the way the logo is engraved carry more authentication weight than the number itself. In both cases, don't expect to "decode a year" the way you can with vintage LV or Chanel.

- Check internal consistency. Does the format match the era the bag claims to be from? A 2007–2021 LV code on a bag with 1990s hardware is a contradiction worth chasing.
- Cross-reference the physical mark. How is it applied — heat-stamped into the leather, embossed on a tab, printed on a sticker? Font weight, spacing, and depth should match the house's known method for that period.
